Yorkshire Terriers (a.k.a. Yorkies)

Yorkshire Terriers are one of the most recognizable terrier breeds around. They are a small breed of dog, usually reaching no more than 9 inches in height and 6 pounds in weight. Yorkshire Terriers generally live between 12 and 15 years. They are often affectionately referred to as Yorkies for short.

Terriers are incredibly well-known for their high energy level, and Yorkshires are no different. They are small but mighty and enjoy active time. They are extremely playful and need significant exercise in order to reign in their energy. Overall Yorkshire Terriers are a relatively dog-friendly breed, so they would likely enjoy a trip to the dog park as much as a game of fetch in the yard. When you are considering adding a Yorkshire Terrier to your family, be sure you have the necessary time to exercise your new family member. If not given a regular outlet for their energy, this wonderful breed can begin to exhibit undesirable traits. But, if you give them adequate opportunity to run around, Yorkshire Terriers are phenomenal companion animals.

Due to their small size, Yorkshire Terriers are also a great companion option for apartment dwellers. They neither take up nor require much space, and are perfectly happy with a smaller living environment.

Yorkshire Terriers are playful, loving, and intelligent. They are much easier to train than many other breeds because they are incredibly smart as well as eager to please. They respond well to positive, encouraging training methods, and love receiving praise for a job well done.

Special Grooming Needs

This breed does have some special grooming needs. Yorkshire Terriers are long-haired and do need regular care form a professional dog groomer. It is possible for an experienced dog owner to learn the right techniques to groom their Yorkshire Terrier, but it is not generally recommended. Traditionally Yorkshire Terriers are left with quite long hair, which requires daily brushing. Many modern Yorkshire Terrier parents opt to trim their dog’s hair shorter, so it is less likely to knot and cause discomfort to your Yorkie. Whether their coat is kept traditionally long or shorter, your Yorkshire Terrier will still benefit from frequent brushing.

Great Companion Dog and Family Pet

Overall, the Yorkshire Terrier is a fantastic companion dog and great family pet. As a very affectionate, playful, and well-behaved breed, Yorkies do well in families. In general, Yorkshire Terriers do not appreciate significant alone time, so they are best suited to individuals who do not spend much time away, or in families with several members who can spend time with the dog throughout the day. A Yorkie spending time with its humans is a happy Yorkie.

Yorkshire Terriers do not shed much and are considered a low-maintenance pet in that respect. While they are a playful breed, Yorkies can be leery of strangers, so they may take time to warm up to new friends. Of course, as such a small breed, they are certainly not a guard dog type of breed.

Yorkies are a great choice for most hopeful dog owners and can adapt well to most living environments. Remember that they need regular exercise, lots of attention, and consistent grooming, and they will be a devoted companion for years to come.
